Imagine lying back inside a lightless, soundproof tank filled with warm water, which matches your body’s core temperature. You effortlessly float on the surface because of the high Epsom salt content. The total silence, feeling of weightlessness and lack of light allows your mind to completely empty and you drift away..
Floatation therapy is one of the latest relaxation concepts to sweep the globe and is already popular with athletes and celebrities such as Elle Macpherson and Jeff Bridges. We sat down with Jeremy and Tim, owners of CityCave Float & Wellness Centres in Brisbane, to find out more about this new wellness therapy.
What are the potential benefits of floating?
Floatation therapy is a peaceful, eye opening way for your body and mind to recover. Together with sensory deprivation and the healing properties of Epsom salts, floatation therapy aids in the function of your neurological, circulatory, respiratory, digestive and musculoskeletal systems as well as benefitting your personal growth and mental health.
There are countless potential benefits both physically and mentally, but the main ones are:
- Relieves aches and pains, as well as speeding up recovery time of sore muscles and injuries by reducing lactic acid build up
- Improves sleep & your ability to rest
- Increases levels of dopamine & endorphins in the body, resulting in a happier sense of self
- Reduces cortisol levels, which directly effect your stress levels
- Increases creativity & opens up the mind for problem solving abilities
- Aids with stress, anxiety & depression
- Improves your circulation of oxygen
- Increases motivation and focus
Can you describe how Floating can help someone to achieve these kinds of results?
Floating is a way of rebooting your mind. Even in bed with the lights turned off, your mind is still processing gravity, touch, smell, and those never-ending thoughts. Inside a float tank, with absolutely no stimuli to process, your mind is allowed to completely empty and de-stress. There is also the opportunity to reach new heights of meditation, creativity or problem solving in the mind. Each individual will have a completely different experience, and floating can even allow you to re-establish your goals and focus in life.
Citycave in Brisbane even offer Couple’s Floating, so you can try something new with your loved one. This is said to bring a new level of intimacy to a couple's relationship - depriving your senses together increases your physical and emotional connection, and ultimately unifies you in a totally unique way.
Can you please explain the difference between a float room and a float tank?
The experience is the same in each, however a float room is perfect for people who would prefer not to be in an enclosed space. The float room features an open bath in a sound proof room with perfect lighting and temperature. The float tank is more of an enclosed capsule, which is also set up with perfect conditions for floatation therapy.
How often should someone go to a Float Tank to achieve the best results?
This also comes down to the individual, but Tim and Jeremy recommend starting at once a week to see what works for you.
What should people expect for their first time?
Every individual is different, so it is best to go in with zero expectations and embrace the experience. Every float you do may be different too. The actual floating part is completely effortless and will just happen naturally, so all you need to do is lie back and breathe.
